Local Expertise
Most decks around the metro went on with the house, and the material tells us the decade. The subdivisions that filled in through the nineties and early two-thousands got pressure-treated pine, and after twenty Kansas City winters they show it: boards cupping and splintering, rails that give when you lean on them, fasteners bleeding rust down the framing.
From there it is all yours. Where the ground falls away behind the house, how high the back door sits, whether you picture a table and eight chairs out there or a grill and two people. That is the upside of a deck reaching this age: you get to fix everything that never quite worked about the old one, the stairs that land in the wrong part of the yard and the ten feet of width that was never enough for furniture.
The Product
Both materials build a good deck. The right answer depends on how much upkeep you want to sign up for and how long you plan to be in the house.
Kansas City Specifics
Plenty of metro lots fall off behind the house, which puts the deck a full story up and changes the footings, the framing and the rail details. That is not a call anyone can make from the driveway.
Kansas City runs through freeze and thaw all winter long. Footings below the frost line and composite decking that does not drink up water are what keep a deck flat and level years later.
The newer subdivisions were platted with young trees, so plenty of yards get sun from noon until dinner. We plan the deck around cover and pick decking colors that hold up in it.
What You Get
Permitted where required, with ledger, footing and guard details done to current requirements.
Layout planned around your door location, grade and how you actually use the space.
Hidden fasteners, clean fascia returns and stair geometry that feels right underfoot.
How It Works
We come out, measure, look at what is actually there, and give you a written price with no obligation.
You choose materials, colors and details with samples in hand, and we confirm everything before anything is ordered.
Our own crews do the work, keep the site clean, and walk the finished job with you before we call it done.
No pressure. Just solutions.

My experience with Shinnova was great. I want to thank Jeremy Sweatman for convencing me to get it done. My house looks new again and it is much warmer inside. The workers were very professional. They cleaned up after themselves every night before they left. Thank you very much.
We are extremely impressed with the professionalism of everyone we worked with Jeremy the bomb in explaining sale of windows and the process, Butch for guiding the installation and Dan for all the follow up on progress with delivery. Questions
Most residential decks take one to two weeks depending on size, height and rail system. Footings and inspections set the schedule more than the carpentry does.
If you plan to stay more than a few years, usually yes: you stop paying for sealing and board replacement. If the budget is tight or the deck is small, treated lumber built well is still a good deck.
Yes, in every city we build in, and the requirements differ by address. We handle the drawings, the permit and the inspections, whether that is Overland Park, Olathe, Kansas City or Lee’s Summit.
Yes, and it is common here. A walk-out puts the door well below the main floor, so we plan the framing, the stair run and the rail heights around the grade you have rather than dropping a standard deck onto it.
