Local Expertise
Two things decide a deck in this county, and neither is the decking. The first is what the house is framed with, because a hundred-year-old wall in Alton or Granite City often has nothing a ledger should be bolted to. The second is the ground, which on a bluff lot falls away fast and in the old mining areas has been settling quietly for decades.
The deck that is out there now has usually reached the age where the boards give underfoot and the rail has movement in it. That is the moment to fix what never worked about it: the size, where the stairs land, and whether the space underneath is doing anything for you.
The Product
Both materials build a good deck. The right answer depends on how much upkeep you want to sign up for and how long you plan to be in the house.
Madison County Specifics
Balloon-framed walls and old masonry are not reliable ledger attachments, whatever the last builder did. Standing the frame on its own posts is the stronger answer, and it is what we will recommend when the wall cannot take it.
Where the county was mined, footings have to be placed and sized with that in mind, and we would rather raise it at the estimate than after the posts start telling on themselves. It changes the plan, not whether the deck gets built.
Above Alton and Godfrey the yard can drop a full story in a few steps. That decides the stair run, the rail and how tall the posts are, and it is also what makes those decks worth building in the first place.

My experience with Shinnova was great. I want to thank Jeremy Sweatman for convencing me to get it done. My house looks new again and it is much warmer inside. The workers were very professional. They cleaned up after themselves every night before they left. Thank you very much.
We are extremely impressed with the professionalism of everyone we worked with Jeremy the bomb in explaining sale of windows and the process, Butch for guiding the installation and Dan for all the follow up on progress with delivery. Questions
Most residential decks take one to two weeks depending on size, height and rail system. Footings and inspections set the schedule more than the carpentry does.
If you plan to stay more than a few years, usually yes: you stop paying for sealing and board replacement. If the budget is tight or the deck is small, treated lumber built well is still a good deck.
Yes. Decks are permitted and inspected, footings included, through your municipality or through Madison County for unincorporated addresses. We prepare the drawings, file them and schedule both inspections.
On newer houses, usually. On the older ones here it is a real question, and the answer comes from what we find behind the siding rather than from what the old deck did. We will show you before we decide it.
