Local Expertise

Entry Doors Across The Metro East

The door that will not latch without a lift is the most common call we get in this county, and it is usually not the door’s fault. Houses here have settled, some of them over ground that was mined a hundred years ago, and a frame that has moved out of square takes the door with it.

The rest of the work is the ordinary kind. Postwar steel entries in Granite City and Wood River with the weatherstrip long gone, tall historic doors in Alton, builder slabs in the newer subdivisions that have been taking afternoon sun for twenty years.

The Product

What Makes A Door Worth Replacing

A door is the one exterior product you touch every single day, so how it feels in the hand matters as much as how it performs against the weather.

  • Insulated fiberglass and steel entry doors with thermal breaks
  • Sliding and hinged patio doors with multi-point locks
  • Storm doors sized and fitted to the existing opening

Madison County Specifics

Why These Door Features Matter In Madison County

When the frame has moved

Hanging a new slab in an old frame does not fix a door that sticks, because the frame is the problem. We replace the door, the frame and the threshold as one assembly and set it plumb in the opening, which is what makes it close with one hand again.

Doors at grade in the bottoms

On the low ground toward the river, entries sit close to grade and take splash-back, snow and standing water. Those get a sill pan and a threshold detailed for that exposure rather than the same specification as a door on the bluff.

Historic entries in Alton and Leclaire

Tall doors with a transom above are part of how those houses are proportioned, so the transom gets specified with the door rather than boxed in. Where the district reviews exterior changes, we prepare that submittal first.

Questions

Madison County Doors FAQ

How long does a door installation take?

A single entry or patio door is usually a one-day job. The opening is never left open overnight: removal, installation, insulation, sealing and trim all happen in the same visit.

Can I keep my existing sidelights?

Often yes, if they are in good condition and the proportions still work with the new slab. We will tell you honestly when replacing the full unit gives a better result than keeping mismatched glass.

Do I need a permit to replace a door here?

For a like-for-like replacement, usually not. If the opening changes size it goes to your municipality, or to Madison County for unincorporated addresses, and we handle the filing.

The door sticks in summer and not in winter. Is that the door?

Often it is the frame and the house rather than the door, and the honest answer matters before you spend anything. We will tell you what we see, and if the right call is to address the movement first, we will say that.
